John Piper has a way of showing people the unsurpassable greatness of God through the shortest of devotional writings, and A Godward Heart, is a shining example of that fact. In a short 50 chapter gift book, John does an amazing job of leading the reader into the glory of God through pure intimacy and joy in God. As a life slogan, Piper has adopted the phrase God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. That truth comes through in each page that Piper writes.
Each chapter exudes Pipers exceeding joy in Christ which is why he has become such a dear advisor to people across the earth. His writings are warm and personal, and at the same time extremely practical and worthy of a second reading. The reason this book was put together was because Piper tells us that he has, “been changed as much by paragraphs as by books”. He centers his word to the reader on the notion that words have a profound impact on the reader. Reading a paragraph two or three times can have varying effects on the reader if the paragraph is understood differently or digested in a different frame of mind. He notes that one can spend a life plumbing the depths of a paragraph or even a sentence.
As the found of Desiring God, John Piper has spent his life on the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Piper has striven with his life towards a lofty goal and a precious calling and we as readers have been asked to come along with him. I am very much helped that Piper has been an open book on display for the world to see as he points us to God and not to his own abilities. On several occasions I have heard Piper speak of his weaknesses and frailties before an awesome and mighty God. Here is a man who has stood toe to toe with uber-academic minds like N.T. Wright and has not batted an eye, as far as the public can see. Here is a man who writes, if I may, from his knees. He writes from a bowed-down posture and has the full glory of God and the ultimate satisfaction of man in that God, in mind when he pens these wonderfully devotional books.
